Ceramic Paints
Ceramic Paint is a water-based paint designed to give a permanent finish to ceramic tiles and crockery, when baked in a domestic oven. It can be stencilled, hand painted, or stippled onto ceramic or porcelain surfaces before baking. Once baked the finish is glossy and permanent. This finish is not for pre-mounted wall tiles as it is only permanent if it is baked. Colours as shown below, plus Matt Medium for adding to reduce shiny finish and Ceramic Thinner for creating translucent washes. Use in conjunction with Ceramic Outliners, for a relief outline effect. See more information/guidelines below.
Note: Our Ceramic Paint is designed for baking in a domestic oven to produce a permanent finish for wet and damp conditions, so is ideal for decorating ceramic tiles and crockery, but it must be baked to achieve permanency.
Ceramic paint can be applied with artist's brushes or sponges and should be left to dry overnight. Once dry the tile or porcelain object should be placed in a cold oven, directly on the shelf and the oven then switched on to 150 degrees centigrade. Once the oven has reached this heat the object/s should be baked for a further 35 minutes. The oven should then be switched off and allowed to cool. Once cool the painted object/s can be removed from the oven. Tiles are then ready for wall mounting. The paints come with full instructions. Colours can be mixed together.
Ceramic paint is not the same as semi-permanent acrylic paints, such as our MSP which is designed to give a temporary all-over cover to tiles - although it is not suitable for showers or areas submerged in water. Tiles and other ceramic surfaces are fired to achieve their super non-absorbency and resistance to water. Paint that is applied to tiles and not re-fired will not last, as water will work behind the surface of the paint and cause it to bubble, peel or crack. MSP can be used as a temporary cover and is good on tiles in dry areas, but use ceramic paint and bake onto the tiles in a domestic oven for a permanent finish for tiles in wet areas.
Every effort has been made to represent our Ceramic Paint colours accurately - however photographic reproduction and different browser colour variants mean that these colour swatches are only an approximate guide. Note: The colour Azurite is a richer and brighter turquoise colour than the swatch shown here. Colour charts are not currently available.
